About Main Street

The Downtown Bellingham Partnership is a Washington Main Street Community, a program of the Washington Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation.  The Main Street Four-Point Approach is a unique preservation-based economic development tool that enables communities like ours to revitalize downtown and neighborhood business districts by leveraging local assets - from historic, cultural, and architectural resources to local enterprises and community pride. It is a comprehensive strategy that addresses the variety of issues and problems that challenge traditional commercial districts. Our four pillars are: economic development, organization, design and historic preservation and promotion and events.

Economic Development

We analyze current market forces to develop long-term solutions. Recruiting new businesses, creatively converting unused space for new uses, and sharpening the competitiveness of traditional merchants. The Partnership helps promote economic development in downtown’s core in creative ways.

We work to develop a framework that is well represented by business and property owners, bankers, citizens, historic preservationists, entrepreneurs, public officials and other local economic development organizations. We collaborate together to renew downtown and to provide the structure and stability to build and maintain a long-term effort. Learn more about our team and board here

Design & Historic Preservation

Our team is responsible for the look and feel of Bellingham’s core commercial district. Historic building rehabilitation, street and alley clean-up, landscaping, street furniture, signage, visual merchandising and lighting all improve the physical image of the downtown as a quality place to shop, work, walk, invest in, and live. Design improvements result in a reinvestment of public and private dollars to downtown and the Partnership looks to our core design community of architects, graphic designers, artists, welders, builders and fabricators to help us shape the city we love.

Promotion & Events

We create an exciting and vibrant downtown that includes: block parties, summer festivals, retail events, tours, night markets, film series, art walks and anything do with the supporting development campaigns that drive customer traffic. Our promotion of downtown inspires a vibe that is enticing to shoppers, investors, and visitors. See a list of our upcoming events here.

How does the Main Street Tax Incentive Program work?

When you pledge to donate to downtown through the Main Street Tax Incentive Program, you can apply to receive 75% of your donation back as a B&O tax credit. Donate $4,000? You'll get a $3,000 credit. And that other $1,000? It's tax deductible since the DBP is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. This means you get to keep your tax dollars in your community, and help us serve you even better. The state cap on incentive eligible donations has been met for 2017. To find out about pledging for 2018, contact us at 360.527.8710 or info@downtownbellingham.com

Thank you to our 2017 Main Street donors!

We would like to extend our great appreciation to the following community partners in supporting our mission of championing the health and vitality of downtown Bellingham. Through their generous contributions, we will be able to bring more excitement, energy and economic vitality to our city in 2017.
